As I was chatting to a friend earlier it dawned on me that my sporting season has turned out to be quite positive this year. As a Spurs fan I was delighted to see them claim the Carling Cup earlier this year. Hopefully it will be the start of something substantial for the club, building on the successful Martin Jol years.

There was also Fulham’s miraculous escape from the clutches of relegation. As a season ticket holder in Fulham, the 2007/08 season was not pleasant with little to cheer. That said hours of getting wet and cold and depressed in the Hammersmith End morphed into unbridled joy in the sunshine underneath the same stand when ex Liverpool & Spurs boy Danny Murphy put a goal in the back of the Pompey goal without reply to keep the team in the Premiership.

Finally there were the Munster boys. Still savouring the after glow of success if I’m honest. I managed to catch up with lots of the post match analysis yesterday (very poor coverage in the papers on Sunday it must be said) which was lovely. Not to mention the 20/1 bet I’d placed last year on Munster winning the cup. I suspect it will be a while before you get those kind of odds on them again.

Anyway, not bad for a single sporting season. Shame my own personal season appears to be heading in the opposite direction. I’m still on the flat of my back pulling out of running & triathlon events faster than Terry Wogan can throw a Eurovision tantrum at.

Speaking of which, ala Terry we should look at this year Euro 2008 and ask ourselves really and truly wouldn’t we be happier if we were there?

Now, with the silly season well and truly underway in terms of pointless Eurovision recriminations, the real question is which country should get my 12 points worth of support for supporting their team in the 2008 Euro (football/soccer) Championships eh?

Taking my lead from some of the more publishable Eurodivel comments, under what criteria should support be given:

a) have visited said country?

b) like their general style of football?

c) they are a neighbour?

d) they are an underdog?

e) kwowing some of the players names?

f) they play for teams I support (Spurs / Fulham??)

g) they look nice?

h) they gave Ireland points?

i) they play good football?

etc etc etc

All other analogies welcome as I put on my thinking cap to ponder.

  1. Sweden gets my vote – purely because they’re the most ethical country to cheer for according to http://www.whoshouldicheerfor.com

  2. No big surprise from me. Well actually I am rooting for two teams to reach the final. Spain v Poland. Spain for the Liverpool contingent and Poland for my family roots.

  3. 3 S

Timely nomination Pete given I’m in Stockholm this weekend. They like their football (and sporting) heroes here but I’m not convinced this will be their tournament. I’ve not been able to put my finger on why yet but there’s definitely a madness here that leaves me scratching my head.

Spain & Poland eh Frank. I remember a few tournaments ago I quite fancied Spain to come through. How young and naive I was. This is always the hope that they will break through the almost team barrier soon but I find myself continuing to ask exactly when. Have I lost the faith?

All that said, I remain undecided on who to support myself. I’ll ponder some more sipping my horribly expenive, horrible Swedish beer. If I had a gun pointed to my head today though I’d have to say Germany. Not very original though is it.
